The Soundtrack of Success: How Brotherhood Fuels Boys Volleyball

With a promising start to the season, Boys Varsity Volleyball dominates with a  record of 6-1. On March 24th, Grandview swept Rock Canyon in three sets. The key to the on court chemistry can be seen from the stands- a brotherhood unmatched. The court booms with the song “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lew Lewis, each varsity player singing the song, despite the intense match. The fun is contagious- the players, coaches, and crowd feel the victory.

“Building [a] bond not only as teammates, but as friends, really strengthens everything that happens on the court,” Cooper Bird Bear (12) said.

From focusing on mental stability and visualizing a win to making sure all of their teammates are ready to play, the boys team has many ways of “locking in” before games. Though not typical for volleyball pre-game routines like hitting lines and stretching warmups, this process is an integral part of their process.

“We do a inhale for six, hold for two, out for seven, and then we do a lot of visualization together,” Devan Hall (12) said. “We visualize our good plays, our highlight reels, how we’re going to succeed today.”

Together, the bond this team has and their pre-game practices have helped Hall, who has been playing since freshman year, achieve 2,000 assists, a goal he had hoped to reach during this season.

“We have a lot of trust in each other, and I know they’re going to pick me up if I make a mistake. So I look to my guys and keep everybody up,” Hall said.

Devan Hall achieved this landmark on the court against Rock Canyon, resulting in a subsequent celebration during the game by his teammates and the crowd.

“We’re always hyping each other up,” said Bird Bear. “
So it’s just a really good brotherhood.”

Their support for one another undoubtedly brings the team together and improves their performance, seen through their undefeated record.

“I think we all lead in a different way on the court and we all support each other,” Creed Kingsbury (9) said. “I would say I lean on my upper classmates a lot because I know they have my back.”

The supportive and positive energy is prevalent everywhere. Each person on the team contributes to the win.

“Our energy is always up, whether we’re on the bench or on the court,” Stratton Anderson (11) said. “It’s loud.”

The team has a clear and simple goal for the rest of the season.

“[We hope to win] the championship,” Hall said. “Just like we did [today], staying disciplined, staying together and having high energy throughout the season.”
