In the first nine games of the Wolves season Grandview suffered 6 losses which gave them a win percentage of 0.333 with half of the season already passed. The team could have taken this rough start of the season and let it infect the rest of the season and lead to an unsuccessful season to say the least. However, the team left the poor performing play in March, since their last loss on the 31st, the eight games played since then has all been wins completely turning  their record around to 11-6 flipping the narrative to show a promising thought to make a deep run into CHSAAs playoffs.

In the 2024-25 season the Wolves made their way to the final four and fell to Cherry Creek right before making it to the state championship. Needless to say expectations were high leading up to the start of the season this year being ranked number three in the state by MaxPreps.

“Even though we were expecting high things this year, we couldn’t go off that because it’s a brand new team this year,” Senior Logan Hurtado said.
” Seeing that ranking before the season kind of made us feel like we were better than we were for sure, but it’s only up from here.”

The main cause to the wolves lack of success to start off the season has come from the fact that this team comes from a new set of people, last year the team was led by ten seniors leaving this year’s team with almost a brand new team filled with young kids lacking varsity experience.

“The 2025 team was a very experienced team, and We had a lot of players that were a part of our Final Four run in 2024 return,” head coach Scott Henry said. “This year we have quite a few players that are experiencing Varsity baseball for the first time. It is taking some time for them to get used to playing at this level but they are eager to learn and have done a pretty good job of adjusting.”

Alongside the new team, focus, and attention to detail has been an issue to the start of the season which is a major part of the success of baseball in order to maintain consistency.

Seth Mittleman throws a pitch against Heritage high school at Grandview high school on March 17th.

“I think we have been inconsistent in the early part of the season. We have had some really focused workouts and we didn’t quite have as much energy and intention as I would have liked.”

The first step to accomplishing these goals comes reality starts with the mindset, much more than just the physical aspect of the sport.

“Baseball is a big mental game, not really a physical game, It really takes a toll on your mindset. After one bad pitch, after one bad play, all you can think about is that bad play, but you can’t, and you just gotta focus on the next play and mark the ball next which is what the coaches have helped teach us,“ Hurtado said.

The approach has shown to improve the record of the team and push them past the first couple of game slump.

“I’ve seen way more positives than negatives. Most of what we do is really really good.

I believe our players have the right mindset going into the second half of the season and they will build more and more confidence in themselves and the team as the season continues,” Henry said.

Nonetheless a rough start to the season doesn’t define the way it will end, the staff and players of Grandview are sure to change the narrative of the season and make a mark on just how the team can stay a dominant baseball program every year.

“I don’t think we ever mentioned our pre-season ranking as a team. It certainly isn’t something we dwell on. Nobody will remember our pre-season ranking. They will only remember how we finish the season,” Henry said.
