Track and Field Preseason Success Promises A Good Season

Track and Field Preseason Success Promises A Good Season

As the track preseason comes to an end, athletes are trading conditioning drills for the excitement of real competition. After weeks of hard work, the team is now ready to put their speed, strength, and teamwork to the test as the official season begins February 23rd.

“It’s nice to see the progress that the different athletes make. Every year we have a few surprises, new runners, jumpers or throwers and they get better and better,” Coach Charles Moss III said.

Even when challenges are on the rise, Moss believes that consistent effort and team support will help athletes stay focused and motivated during competition, which pushes athletes to improve and perform at a higher level each week.

“Our competition is always good. The state of Colorado is one of the best for running, and there are really great teams out there,” Moss said. “Being able to go out and compete our best every week matters.”

Success is not measured only by medals or broken records according to coach Moss. Personal growth and effort are just as important.

Each individual athlete should do their absolute best, and have a good time while they’re doing it,” Moss said.

Throughout the pre season, athletes have focused on conditioning and refining their techniques, building a strong foundation for the competitive season coming their way. With so many different events in track and field it can be difficult for athletes to choose just one specialty.

“It’s really hard to just choose one event. This year our sprint relays will hopefully be pretty good, but it’s hard to get outside [on the track]. and practice specific jumping, pole vaulting and stuff like that during the winter,” Moss Said.

Track and field also offers many opportunities for athletes on so many different skill levels. Making it one of the most inclusive sports. Whether someone is a beginner trying a new event for the first time or an experienced competitor aiming to break records, there is a place for everyone on the team. The variety of events allows athletes to discover their strengths while continuing to grow and challenge themselves throughout the season.

“Anybody can do track and field on some level. There’s an event for everyone and there’s all sorts of different levels. We always have athletes that come out for the 1st time. Even as juniors and seniors and perform very well,”  Moss said.

Beyond performances and results, he believes attitude and effort are truly what helps athletes feel like they belong on the team.

“Having a good time while they’re doing it and just coming out and giving it your best and you’ll fit right in,” Moss said.
