“A unique opportunity to voice your opinion and foster change that impacts all of us” is the way that Chris Smith’s infographic describes his Q&A, which was supposed to be held on January 13th.
However, this framing stands in sharp contrast to the recent allegations raised against Smith and the district’s leadership. Current and former employees have accused district leadership of fostering a toxic work environment marked by intimidation, retaliation, and a lack of transparency, with particular concern surrounding a potential conflict of interest involving Smith and the district’s Chief Human Resources Officer, his wife. Critics argue that this dynamic has left employees without a safe or impartial place to report concerns. These allegations have been detailed in a formal complaint and highlighted in recent media coverage, raising questions about the district’s commitment to accountability and open dialogue. At the same time, Smith has declined to answer questions from Denver7 News, adding to concerns over reduced accessibility to public inquiry. The irony is notable: an event intended to “foster change” and “voice opinions” was withdrawn amid increasing calls for dialogue and transparency.
It appears that, in light of this, Smith cancelled his Q&A; however, this interpretation is speculative. It remains unclear whether the decision was made to avoid questioning, to stay out of the headlines, or for another unknown reason. Nonetheless, contact with any news source appears to be out of the question thus far.
In an effort to gain clarity, our editorial team contacted Cherry Creek High School, the Cherry Creek School District Superintendent’s Office, and personally emailed Christopher Smith. Currently, no response has been received explaining the cancellation of the Q&A, nor has there been a reply to requests for further questioning regarding the current situation.
Continued coverage and follow-ups will be posted soon.
