Field Hockey Wins First Games In 3 Years

On August 29th, Grandview’s Girls Field Hockey team broke their losing streak of 1,106 days by beating Poudre School District in a 2-1 win. The team attributes these wins to each and every one of the players putting in their best effort on and off the field.

“It’s really just the hard work and  putting in 110% effort every single day at practice and really practicing how we want to be playing on the field,” team manager Courtney Gomez (12) said.

Field hockey comes with a series of challenges, one of the biggest being the amount of girls joining the team.

“[In the] past couple years in general the lack of girls joining field hockey [was a problem]. But, this year we have a lot of new girls that are really interested in playing. I’m so excited to see how this program is going to benefit with them,” Gomez said.

With the new players has come a sense of team culture and goals that have been implemented thus far.

“[We] ensure that we have a good community within field hockey and good commitment as well- we’re just there for the right reasons, and that we’re ready,” Gomez said.

Senior player Caitlin Mitchell contributes to a conducive environment that has led the team to their most recent wins.

“This season, I really wanted to have our team work well together. I’ve tried to be more of a team player. I think that me and my whole team have accomplished this goal, because we worked really well together, and we’re always keeping a positive mindset,” Mitchell said.

Their strengthening chemistry will go beyond their regular season games. For the first time since pre-COVID, Grandview Girls Field Hockey is competing in the state championship playoffs.

“I definitely think we’re just gonna keep winning through the playoffs- through the next seasons- even after I’m gone. It’s just going to encourage us to win more games,” Mitchell said.

Field hockey, with their record of 3-13-0 as of October 30th have experienced their share of both wins and losses. They have been able to take away lessons from both results.

“Every game we win, we’re just more confident for the next ones- knowing that we are a good team, [and that] we can go toe-to-toe with any other team. It makes us more prepared for the next game,” Mitchell said.

No matter the outcome of the season, Grandview’s Girls Field Hockey ensures the field is a great place to be.

“It’s really loud, and pretty fun. There’s a lot of screaming and yelling and music. It’s just a really happy place to be, and it’s like nothing can bring us down,” Mitchell said.
