“Grand” is one of the many words that can be used to describe works of art. The word itself does not begin to describe the work and meaning students have put into their artwork throughout this year.
From April 22nd to May 7th, the Grand Art Show will display the work of students who have completed an art course throughout the year. It displays different mediums of art including paintings, pottery, photos, and other forms of art from all kinds of students.
“We want to represent everyone in the art show,” Jennifer Funnel, one of Grandview’s art teachers, said. “Our goal is to turn the library into a gallery. Any surface we can mount our displays on, we will.”
Both teachers and students work incredibly hard to put this art show together and while teachers are busy picking out pieces for the art show, students like Annalise Austin, Samantha Page, and Savannah Sherrer can be found working on their senior displays for the Grand Art Show.
Austin, who specializes in figure drawing, portrays human figures in various shapes and sizes. There is no telling how much work she puts into the masterpieces she makes.
“Figure drawing, generally, is when
you’ll have a model and you’ll start with one minute poses. Just getting a feel of the paper and the charcoal,” Austin said. “Then you move into longer length poses like 2-5 minutes. Some even last for 15 minutes.”
While Austin is busy drawing the human body, Sherrer focuses more on drawing and painting things sentimental to her.
“Flowers are one of the biggest inspirations for me just because they’re so naturally beautiful,” Sherrer said.
Page, just like Austin, focuses more on the beauty of human anatomy.
“A lot of it was my own personal experience and how I feel in relation to my body and myself,” Page said. “It’s okay to feel uncomfortable in your body sometimes, but don’t let that hold you back.”
An artist’s muse is always different, which is one of the reasons Funnel makes it so important to display art not only to the students, but also staff and parents.
“These students put so much time and effort into their artwork and so we showcase it,” Sarah Folsoum, another art teacher at Grandview said. “Having an art show at the end of the year to show their hard work is really important.”
