Students are always struggling with their schedule during their high school years. They’re searching to find the best position for them to get ready for college, but is changing classes mid semester a good idea?
“I have changed my schedule before, and changing the schedule helps my grade. I don’t have to stress the class that I don’t want, and I got the class I want,” said anonymous.
Every student wants a good grade, but they’ll move to a higher class if they want to challenge themselves. However some teachers don’t recommend switching mid-sem.
“It’s a lot harder for the student to change in the middle of the semester. The easiest time to change would be at the semester, so the end of December, or right of the beginning of the school year. It’s really hard to change after a month or so in class, ” said English Teacher, Bonne Wetherbee.
The schedule change is not only between a student and their grade, but they need talk to their teacher, counselor or even department coordinator about it.
“I look at their grades from last year, and what level they were. Mrs.Mitchell, coordinator of the math department, said, “to see where they came from, what their grade was, who’s their old teacher to get more information to see if the level change is appropriate.”
The counselor can only give students the idea to change schedules, but the teacher and department director recommendations are required. Counselor can’t do anything until they receive a signature of approval.
“I have changed my schedule before, and changing the schedule helps my grade. I don’t have to stress the class that I don’t want, and I got the class I want,” said anonymous.
According to Cadance Hobbs, the counselor of class of 2019 and 2021 (S-Z), schedule changes are not allowed in the middle of the semester.
Students grades suffer if they aren’t in the right classes.
“I would normally not recommend, for most students, to change schedules, because even if you’re getting out of the class that is either hard or you don’t like, you’re going to a new class, and start really behind,” said Hobbs.
“Think about when you’re absent or sick from school and miss a day or even a week of school, how lost and confused you are. So if you start a class in a middle of semester, you’re going to be really lost and behind because you still have to know all the information for the final exam,” said Hobbs.
If students are thinking about changing schedules, it should happen at the end of the semester. So they aren’t jumping into a class where they’re weeks behind the rest of the class, and still have to take the final.
“When you change, you have to get know the new teacher, and every teacher does the thing differently. Like in an English classes, if you start with a new teacher, you might be in the middle of the book,” said Wetherbee.
