The Grandview wolves are again on the hunt for glory, advancing to Class 6A state championship for the third time in four seasons after a hard-fought win over Pine Creek on Thursday.
The Wolves have had an elite level season since the start, starting with five wins and heading into the championship game with an 18-game win streak, but came close to ending with one of their closest wins with only 4 points to spare.
Grandview’s first minutes on the court were rough, immediately trailing 11-2 in just the first 8 minutes of the game before cutting the deficit from 13-8 right before the quarter. To start the second, the Eagles generate their lead 20-10, right before a big timeout from head coach Josh Ulitzky.
“[In the timeout] I told them to work possession by possession, get a stop, and the offense would just take care of itself. We will get some stops so just stay composed and we will go on to the next play,” Ulitzky said.
Following this timeout, it rallied the Wolves to go onto a 17-2 point run through the second quarter, and entering after the half, giving the Wolves the lead 27-22, paving the way for how the rest of the game went.
The wolves kept the lead throughout a defensive heavy matchup and won the game 39-35.
“[The team] just battled and persevered. They got some toughings that didn’t necessarily go our way or we struggled a bit but they pushed through so that’s what I’m most proud of,” Ulitzky said.
