Three things are inevitable in life, death, taxes, and the Chiefs winning. The easily unlikable team has been to 4 out of the last 5 Super Bowls which makes me continue to hate them more and more every year.
From the Success, their attempt to break NFL history with the first third consecutive Superbowl win this Sunday has oversaturated and flooded social media with constant Chiefs content when most people don’t even want to see it.
A poll posted in September by Betonline.ag revealed that the Chiefs are now the most hated team in the NFL and this can come from many different reasons but a leading factor could be the referee’s favorability.
During Chiefs games, there have been many controversial and game-deciding decisions from the referees including a late pass interference call on fourth down determining the game against the Cincinnati Bengals early in the season. A no-call pass interference in the endzone against the Atlanta Falcons, and most recently against the Buffalo Bills when the referees seem to misjudge a crucial first down call from Buffalo to send the Chiefs to the Superbowl. All of these calls arguably led them to win the game with the help of the referees which should have all gone the other way.
According to team rankings, the Chiefs are tied with the Cardinals in first place for the lowest average penalties per game. This could show that they are better disciplined than any other team but I don’t think so. In the stat line “penalty first downs per game,” they are positioned at fifth, showing that the referees seem to have a bit of a bias toward their beloved Chiefs.
Watching the Chiefs win over a missed call is bad enough as it is, but when broadcasters show the face of someone irrelevant to the game like Taylor Swift cheering is where fans and I truly find a hatred for the team. After Swift started a relationship with Travis Kelce she has engraved herself as a face of the franchise and simply, there’s too much Taylor Swift when people just want to watch football.
After all, those who live in Colorado and like the Broncos have fallen to the custom of disliking Chiefs. The Broncos are in the same division and play them twice every year creating a certain rivalry only gaining in popularity from the increase in competition the Broncos have put up in recent games.
