CHROMAKOPIA Album Review- Emotional Lyricism and Creative Composition [OPINIONS]

With Tyler the Creator’s new album “CHROMAKOPIA” being released for over a month now, fans have been able to get a feel of all the songs and really decide what ones align with their style.

When Tyler the Creator’s music first came out, it was one of a kind. It revolutionized the music industry by not specifically belonging to one genre or the other. Today, many people associate their music taste with him, making his recent drop remarkably special. The album is called “CHROMAKOPIA”, and has ten features with many different artists.

Certain songs overshadow the rest in the best way possible. The songs called “Balloon” and “Sticky” don’t connect with Tyler’s music theme.  They are very off-putting, and almost have too much going on in the song- with the vocals, whistles, and the singing combined- the song is overwhelming.

The features in this song, GloRilla, Sexxy Red, and Lil Wayne may have something to do with the nature of “Sticky”. Freshman Kellyn Ruiz agrees.

“‘Sticky’ [was my favorite song on the album] because it was the song with the most features and was an overall good song to listen to,” Ruiz said.

“Balloon” continues on and matches the theme of “Sticky” with being upbeat, and giving that euphoric feeling. It gives a circus-clown-vibe, especially with the artist feature, Doechii. Her high pitched voice with the beat of the song, and the added vocals put together adds to the song’s persona.

While these songs are overwhelming and not necessarily the norm, they are just different from the music that Tyler the Creator is known for making. This album was especially shocking because of the almost sudden switches from comical music to meaningful. Tyler’s song “Like Him”[Ft. Lola Young] dug deeper, with a strong meaningful story behind it.

It is centered around the absence of Tyler’s father, and how much it has affected him. The song’s intro is Tyler’s mother, Bonita Smith, talking about how much Tyler resembles his dad- Walter Whitman.

The struggle of his identity, as well as the seeking for validation and understanding, is the main idea of what the song emulated- similar to the song “Darling, I” [Ft. Teezo Touchdown]. Both, with a more calming chorus, put emphasis on the message and lyrics in the song.

Overall, CHROMAKOPIA has a very thorough pattern throughout the whole album, with a  specific unique mood to each subset of songs in the album. CHROMAKOPIA has clearly already had a huge impact on the music industry- touching people’s hearts by using emotional lyricism and creative composition. Tyler is a one-of-a-kind icon in today’s modern culture.
