It’s time for FNL, facepaint, and touchdowns: it’s football season.
“Football is about the spirit and playing as a team. I love the challenge of being in the centennial league and trying to get our team to be the best on every Thursday or Friday night,” Coach Doherty, Grandview’s head football coach, said.
So far the Grandview football team has played against Legend, Ralston Valley, Legacy, Rock Canyon, and Vista Peak. We have 2 wins so far.
Legend: 21-14 Loss
Ralston Valley: 10-9 Loss
Legacy: 34-27 Loss
Rock Canyon: 42-17 Win
Vista Peak: 42-7 Win
“I think we just keep a one play mentality mindset. You know, we can’t look ahead, we can’t look back. We just got to be able to keep one play at a time and we’ll be able to be alright, regardless of win or loss,” Varsity starter center Jackson O’Grady (12) said.
Grandview Students are expecting some more wins coming up. Out of the ten weeks of summer, Grandview’s varsity football team spent eight of those weeks at Grandviews summer camp (Organized Team Activities). There they practiced drills, ran, lifted, and scrimmaged against Valor and Carson.
“I love practice with all my teammates and I think that all of us have good chemistry on the field, which allows us to be a better team both on and off the field,” O’Grady said.
The Grandview football team is a tight knit family that all consider each other close brothers. This reflects in their playing – playing together like a pack of wolves.
“Our football team is really energetic. I think it’s our main thing. Everyone is hyped on game day. Everyone is excited. We got that energy.” Varsity starting middle linebacker Jack Naranbayar (12th) said.
The team is especially excited for their rivals, in which they find strategies for each team.
“We try to find their weaknesses, and if they have any weaknesses we try to figure out how we can exploit those weaknesses.” Doherty said.
Our coaches for Grandview analyze footage of rival teams for hours to get any advantages against the teams to win. This practice helped us take the win against Vista Peak 42-7 in our Homecoming game – where Grandview students went wild.
“[I] love being in the stands cheering, getting loud and supporting our friends,” Paige Gust (9) said.
Grandview’s school spirit is clear when looking out onto the stands filled with blue and black. Students’ school spirit ranges from facepaint to wearing Grandview gear from head to toe. Some students will go as far as going to the games an hour early just to get good seats.
“I think football is something everyone goes to. It’s always great to watch our team win, and it’s fun to get hype with your friends. The school spirit is always great to be a part of,” Asiya Mansur (12) said.
FNL has been something for coaches, students, and players to look forward to. Everyone is filled with anticipation for more games and the potential playoffs.
“I like the trajectory of our team and I’m excited to see where this all ends,” Doherty said.
