Trouble in the Rockies: Baseball’s Biggest Letdown Since 93′ [OPINION]
This season marks the 30th anniversary of the Rockies introduction to the MLB. In the past 29 years, there have been no Division Titles, no World Series wins, and haven’t even had a season where you won more than 92 games. The fans deserve better.
As the Major League Baseball 2023 Season is set to begin on March 30th, a look at this year’s Colorado Ball Club is expected to be another disappointment for the Rockies Faithful. Talent has come and gone. Season after the season has ended the same as the last. 2007 was the Rockies one and only World Series appearance, where they lost. The Rockies have never even won a Division Title. So it raises the question, are ownership and management interested in success or money?
A few years ago, a trip to beautiful Coors Field provided fans with an opportunity to see a very talented roster. With the likes of Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story, and even forgotten hometown favorite Troy Tulowitzki. Arenado is now a St. Louis Cardinal, and Story is now a Boston Red Sox. Of course today you still can see the one and only Charlie Blackmon, but I don’t think many would disagree when I say Blackmon can’t single handily lead this club to a division title, let alone a World Series appearance. Players like Kyle Freeland and C.J. Cron, give the Rockies a fighting chance versus the bottom teams of the MLB. Kris Bryant, former World Series Champion, with the Chicago Cubs, is merely a jersey seller.
The 2023 roster, is very similar to the 2022 roster. A roster that posted a record of 68-94. So for Rockies fans what is there to look forward to? This is a ball club that hasn’t had a winning record since 2018. Now if you considered them to be in a rebuild, four straight losing seasons, wouldn’t be a big deal. Yet the Rockies had talented players and a roster that could have made a push to win something. You had Arenado, Story, Freeland, Blackmon, and a formidable roster yet when considering their win-loss record, you would have sworn none of those guys were there.
Over the past four seasons, the Rockies have gone 239-306 (.439). Under .500 for a club that had talent is disappointing. Especially when you consider as of 2018, they were one game back of tying the Los Angeles Dodgers, for the NL West Division Title, at 91-71. After that 2018 season, it seems as though ownership and management made no effort to retain or add on talent when you were on the verge of something really special. Last time I checked you can’t expect to improve by subtracting talent.
Since 2008, the year after the Rockies made it to the World Series, they have finished Top 10 in attendance. Coors Field is considered one of the nicest baseball stadiums in the league and is a staple of Downtown Denver during the summer. Beautiful green grass. Jumbotron in the shape of the mountains. Bars and Restaurants all over. One of the best game-day experiences in the MLB. With all this revenue, as well as continued fan support, we would come to think, management would want to put talent on the field. While they have had some stars, they always fall short of putting those few other talented players next to their own stars. The Rockies Faithful deserve better. When receiving unwavering support, you owe it to your fans to put players on the field that will give the fans something to cheer for. Isn’t the goal championships? Not attendance. Seems as though to me they care more for money than the fans, because you can’t convince me players aren’t interested in Denver, especially when they play Spring through Fall.
A message to Dick Monfort (Rockies Owner), and Bill Schmidt (Rockies General Manager), stop telling the media and fans to wait. This season marks the 30th anniversary of the Rockies introduction to the MLB. In the past 29 years, there have been no Division Titles, no World Series wins, and haven’t even had a season where you won more than 92 games. The fans deserve better. Stop worrying about Coors Field, and filling the stands, and give Coloradans something to cheer for. The Colorado Avalanche just won another Stanley Cup. The Broncos won a Super Bowl a few years ago, and seem to be on the rise again, and the Nuggets are in contention for an NBA Finals appearance this season. The Rockies are the only underperforming major sports team in Colorado as of 2023. Any longer of this management of the Rockies, and it’s time for fans to accept, the people up top want your money. Not your happiness. The clock is ticking, and it’s ticking fast. Don’t let the Mile High air get to you.
